Online Voter Registration

Yes, California has Online Voter Registration. Application is checked with signature on file with DMV. If no signature on file with DMV, must send signed copy to county elections office. You can register online here.

Voter ID

California has no voter ID requirements.

Vote-By-Mail

California does have “no-excuse” vote-by-mail. Ballot request must be received 7 days before Election Day or in person and returned postmarked on Election Day and received no later than 3 days after Election Day.

Early Voting

California has in-person early voting in some counties. Early voting begins 29 days prior to Election Day and ends the day prior to Election Day. Early voting is held at County election offices and other locations determined by County Election Officials. See if your county has an Early Voting location here.

Automatic Voter Registration (Motor Voter)

California has Automatic Voter Registration. When an individual goes to the DMV to obtain or renew a driver’s license, or to get a state identification card, the individual will be asked to affirm their eligibility to vote and will be given the choice of opting out of registering at that time. Information about anyone who does not decline registration will be electronically transmitted from the DMV to the Secretary of State’s office, where citizenship will be verified and individuals will be registered. Currently planned to expand beyond DMV to other state agencies.

Minor Pre-Registration

California allows voters to pre-register at the age of 16.
