Statement: The Voter Participation Center Responds to President Trump’s Baseless Claims of Voter Fraud

In response to President Trump’s address last night on American election security, Tom Lopach, President and CEO of the Voter Participation Center, released the following statement:

“Last night, the American people heard the ramblings of a man deeply afraid of American voters. President Trump knows that when we show up to vote, our government becomes more representative of all Americans. Instead of allowing elections to be a contest of ideas, he’s trying to control who gets to participate. That’s not how democracy works. This is an attempt to rig the elections before a single vote is even cast. 

“The President claims that his extreme voter suppression bill, the SAVE America Act, is the magical cure to make American elections safer. In reality, the SAVE America Act would weaken the will of the electorate by making it harder for eligible Americans to vote by removing the methods 83% of voters relied on to register or update their registration in the 2023–2024 election cycle.

“If President Trump was truly concerned about foreign interference in our elections, why dismantle the systems designed to stop it? Let’s not forget: this administration fired the national security and cybersecurity experts responsible for monitoring and disrupting foreign disinformation campaigns, while defunding the cybersecurity programs that helped protect as many as 3,700 election jurisdictions from cyberattacks.

“You don’t dismantle election security infrastructure if you’re serious about protecting elections. You dismantle it if you’re planning to claim, without evidence, that the system failed you.

“To every eligible American: do not listen to the President’s desperate and inaccurate claims. Your vote matters! Your vote makes a difference. We urge every eligible American to register to vote and turn out to vote this year to ensure your voice is heard.”
