Opinion Guest Column: Honor John Lewis: Keep voter turnout strong in Georgia

Rev. James “Major” Woodall, state president of the Georgia NAACP, and Tom Lopach, president and CEO of the Voter Participation Center and Center for Voter Information, co-authored an op-ed in the Augusta Chronicle urging Georgians to fight voter suppression by showing up in large numbers at the polls.

“The pandemic has upended everything about how Americans cast their ballots…What’s more, coronavirus is disproportionately impacting people of color, who make up 38% of Georgia’s voting-eligible population. That’s why our organizations, Georgia NAACP and VPC/CVI, sent about 1.8 million vote-by-mail applications to eligible voters in Georgia ahead of the Senate runoffs. We are bringing democracy to doorsteps and encouraging people to vote early and safely, whether by mail or in person. The nonpartisan Voter Participation Center and Center for Voter Information are sending an additional 19.4 million mailings to Georgians, particularly to members of the New American Majority. The letters encourage participation through vote by mail, early vote in person, and safe Election Day voting from eligible voters in Georgia.”
