Online Voter Registration

Yes, Wisconsin has Online Voter Registration. You can register online here.

Voter ID

Strict = if no identification, voter must take additional measures after Election Day to have ballot counted

Non-strict = if no identification, voter still has option to cast ballot that may be counted without additional measures by voter


Wisconsin has strict photo ID requirements. Here are the approved forms of ID:

  • A Wisconsin DOT-issued driver license, even if driving privileges are revoked or suspended
  • A Wisconsin DOT-issued identification card
  • Military ID card issued by the U.S. Uniformed Services
  • A U.S. passport book or card
  • A certificate of naturalization (that was issued not earlier than two years before the date of the election)
  • An identification card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe in Wisconsin
  • A driver license receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT (valid for 45 days from date issued)
  • An identification card receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT (valid for 45 days from date issued)
  • A Wisconsin DMV ID Petition Process Photo Receipt (valid for 180 days from date issued)
  • A Veteran Affairs ID card (must be unexpired or have no expiration date)

A photo identification card issued by a Wisconsin accredited university or college, or technical college that contains the following:

  • Date the card was issued
  • Signature of student
  • Expiration date no later than two years after date of issuance, can still be used if expired
  • The university or college ID must be accompanied by a separate document that proves enrollment, such asa tuition fee receipt, enrollment verification letter, or class schedule


Wisconsin does have “no-excuse” vote-by-mail. Your ballot request must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday before Election Day (mailed) or  7:00 p.m. on Friday before Election Day if in person. Your completed ballot must be received by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Early Voting

Wisconsin has in-person early voting. Early voting begins on the 3rd Monday prior to Election Day (“in-person absentee” rather than “early” voting) and ends 7:00 p.m. or close of business on Friday prior to Election Day (whichever occurs later). Early voting is located at Municipal Clerks’ Offices.

Automatic Voter Registration (Motor Voter)

Wisconsin has no Automatic Voter Registration.

Minor Pre-Registration
