Online Voter Registration

Yes, Tennessee has Online Voter Registration. Need TN drivers’ license or TN Department of Safety and Homeland Security ID. You can register online here.

Voter ID

Strict = if no identification, voter must take additional measures after Election Day to have ballot counted

Non-strict = if no identification, voter still has option to cast ballot that may be counted without additional measures by voter


Tennessee has strict photo ID requirements. Here are the approved forms of ID in the state of Tennessee, even if expired:

  • Tennessee driver license with your photo
  • United States Passport
  • Photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security
  • Photo ID issued by the federal or Tennessee state government
  • United States Military photo ID
  • Tennessee handgun carry permit with your photo


Tennessee does not have “no-excuse” vote-by-mail.

Early Voting

Tennessee has in-person early voting. Early voting begins 20 days prior to Election Day and ends 5 days prior to Election Day (7 days for Presidential Preference Primary). Early voting is located at Offices of County Election Commission and satellite locations opened by County Election Commission. More information early voting is available here.

Automatic Voter Registration (Motor Voter)

Tennessee has no Automatic Voter Registration.

Minor Pre-Registration
