Online Voter Registration

Yes, Rhode Island has Online Voter Registration. You can register online here.

Voter ID

Strict = if no identification, voter must take additional measures after Election Day to have ballot counted

Non-strict = if no identification, voter still has option to cast ballot that may be counted without additional measures by voter

Rhode Island has non-strict photo ID requirements. Here are the approved forms of ID in the state of Rhode Island:

  • RI Driver’s License or Permit
  • RI Voter ID Card
  • U.S. Passport
  • ID issued by a U.S. educational institution
  • U.S. military ID
  • ID card issued by the United States or the State of Rhode Island
  • Government issued medical card
  • Tribal ID

Vote-By-Mail

Rhode Island does have “no-excuse” vote-by-mail. You must request your ballot by 4:00 p.m. on the 21st day before Election Day.. Your ballot must be received by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Early Voting

Rhode Island has no in-person early voting.

Automatic Voter Registration (Motor Voter)

Yes, Rhode Island has Automatic Voter Registration. It automatically registers individuals when they apply for or renew a drivers license or personal ID card unless the applicant opts out. Allows a path for other state agencies to do the same.

Minor Pre-Registration

Rhode Island allows voters to pre-register at the age of 16.
