Voter ID

Strict = if no identification, voter must take additional measures after Election Day to have ballot counted

Non-strict = if no identification, voter still has option to cast ballot that may be counted without additional measures by voter

Ohio has strict, non-photo ID requirements. Here are the approved forms of ID in the state of Ohio:

  • An unexpired Ohio driver’s license or state identification card with present or former address so long as the voter’s present residential address is printed in the official list of registered voters for that precinct;
  • A military identification;
  • A photo identification that was issued by the United States government or the State of Ohio, that contains the voter’s name and current address and that has an expiration date that has not passed;
  • An original or copy of a current utility bill with the voter’s name and present address;
  • An original or copy of a current bank statement with the voter’s name and present address;
  • An original or copy of a current government check with the voter’s name and present address;
  • An original or copy of a current paycheck with the voter’s name and present address; or
  • An original or copy of a current other government document (other than a notice of voter registration mailed by a board of elections) that shows the voter’s name and present address.

*For utility bills, bank statements, government checks, paychecks, and other government documents, “current” is defined as within the last 12 months.

Vote-By-Mail

Ohio does have “no-excuse” vote-by-mail. You must request your ballot 3 days before Election Day. Your ballot must be received postmarked by the day before Election Day or in person by close of polls on Election Day.

Early Voting

Ohio has in-person early voting (in the form of “in-person absentee” rather than “early” voting). Early voting begins on the day after the close of voter registration (typically, 29 days prior to Election Day but can fluctuate if the close of voter registration falls on a weekend or holiday) and ends 2:00 p.m. the Monday prior to Election Day. Early voting is located at County board of elections or early voting center as designated by the county. More information early voting is available here.

Automatic Voter Registration (Motor Voter)

Ohio has no Automatic Voter Registration.

Minor Pre-Registration

No specific provision. Contact your state election officials for details.
