Voter ID

Strict = if no identification, voter must take additional measures after Election Day to have ballot counted

Non-strict = if no identification, voter still has option to cast ballot that may be counted without additional measures by voter

North Dakota has strict, non-photo ID requirements. Here are the approved forms of ID in the state of North Dakota:

  • Driver’s license
  • Nondriver’s identification card
  • Tribal government or BIA issued identification
  • Long term care identification certificate (provided by ND facility)
  • A federal judge has ordered that a qualified elector is to be issued a ballot if the elector presents “another” form of identification.
  • If an individual’s valid form of identification does not include name, address, or date of birth; or the information is not current, the individual may supplement the identification with a current utility bill; a current bank statement; a check issued by a federal, state, local, or tribal government; a paycheck; or a document issued by a federal, state, local, or tribal government.
  • If an individual is not able to show a valid form of identification but asserts qualifications as an elector, the individual may mark a ballot that will be securely set aside. When the individual provides valid identification to the proper election official prior to the meeting of the canvassing board, the set aside ballot will be presented to the canvassing board for proper inclusion in the tally.

North Dakota does have “no-excuse” vote-by-mail. Your ballot must be returned postmarked by the day prior to Election Day.

Early Voting

North Dakota has in-person early voting. Early voting begins 15 days prior to Election Day and ends the day prior to Election Day. Early voting is located at locations established at discretion of County Auditor. More information early voting is available here.
