Online Voter Registration

Yes, Iowa has Online Voter Registration. Residents are able to register online by accessing a voter registration application through the state’s Department of Transportation website (Drivers’ license or ID Card # required). It is limited to residents who have a signature already on file with the DOT. You can register online here.

Voter ID

Strict = if no identification, voter must take additional measures after Election Day to have ballot counted

Non-strict = if no identification, voter still has option to cast ballot that may be counted without additional measures by voter


Iowa has non-strict, non-photo ID requirements. Here are the approved forms of ID in the state of Iowa:

  • Iowa Driver’s License
  • Iowa Non-Operator’s ID
  • U.S. Passport
  • Military ID
  • Veteran’s ID
  • Voter ID Card


Iowa does have “no-excuse” vote-by-mail. You must request your ballot by 5:00 p.m. 10 days before General, or by 5:00 p.m. 11 days before other elections. Your ballot must be received by Election Day or postmarked by Monday before Election Day and received the Monday following Election Day.

Early Voting

Iowa has in-person early voting. Early voting begins on the 40 days prior to Election Day for Primary/General (“in-person absentee” rather than “early” voting and ends 5:00 p.m. the day prior to Election Day. Early voting is located at County Auditors’ Offices and other locations established by Commissioner. Absentee voting in-person available at Auditor’s Office from 8:00-11:00 A.M. on Election Day if polls do not open until 12:00 p.m. More information early voting is available here.

Automatic Voter Registration (Motor Voter)

Iowa has no Automatic Voter Registration.

Minor Pre-Registration

Iowa allows registration of those who are 17 and 1/2 years old if they turn 18 before the next election.
